What is your motivation?

Motivation is so important! What is your motivation? Is it money, power, fame, do you need people to like you? Are you dying for a relationship, or the next drink, drugs, or a cigaret? If love is not your first motivation, you are missing the mark.

In the book of Revelation 2:1-4 the church at Ephesus is commended for doing many things right, but in verse 4 it says this, “Yet I hold this against you: You have forsaken your first love.”

This is talking about motivation. The church was doing many great works, but what was their motive? And what was the first love that they had forsaken?

If you don’t have the right motive, this next is down right scary. In Matthew 16:24 the Lord Jesus says to his disciples, "If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow me”. This is not possible without the proper understanding and the right motive. The cross is a place of death, and neutrally death is not something most people even like to think about.

What does this mean? John 12:24 I tell you the truth, unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only a single seed. But if it dies, it produces many seeds. 25 The man who loves his life will lose it, while the man who hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life.

What is love, what is the first love we should not forsake, and what does it mean to deny myself, take up my cross and fallow Jesus? Don’t be afraid to think about Spiritual things. Just remember that the gospel is the “good news”. And Jesus said, you will know the truth, and the truth will set you FREE. John 8:32 And John 8:36 So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed. This is ALL GOOD when you understand love and first love.

1John4:10 This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. John 3:16 God so loved the world...And God is love in 1John 4:8&16. What was the motive behind Jesus allowing himself to be nailed to the cross? It was the love of his Father for him that he lived in every day, and wanted the whole world to know. There is no greater proof of how much God loves you than the cross. You can make this truth be personal. It’s as much for you as anyone.

The next time you think, if I don’t have a drink, drugs, a cigaret etc, I’ll die. Think about the great love Jesus showed you on the cross to set you free, and die...love is the greatest power in the universe. If you rest in God’s love for you, you won’t fear death. By taking up your cross with the motivation of God’s love for you, you can die to those habits. As you allow the truth of God’s love for you to wash your mind (this is the true brain washing we all need) all the things of the lower Earthly life will give way to the higher Heavenly life that truly sets us free.

So believer, lift you cross high and follow Jesus into the world to let everyone know that God is for us, and NOT against us. God wants to set us free, He doesn’t want to put us in bondage. The world, the flesh, and the devil does that. In John10:10b Jesus said, “I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.” That’s what we all want deep in our soul.

It’s all by grace through faith...it’s a gift, not of works (we can’t earn God’s love) and never could. Ephesians 2:8&9

I hope you understand that I’m just scratching the surface of this truth. I will close with this...Ephesians 3:16 -19 I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being, 17 so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, 18 may have power, together with all the saints, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, 19 and to know this love that surpasses knowledge--that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God.

Think on these things!
