The Green Contradiction

These days “green” has come to mean taking care of the environment. If man poisons the environment he will poison himself. So if we want to live we need to treat the environment like our lives depend on it. And to that all the green people say...AMEN! Who doesn’t want pure water to drink, and fresh air to breath?

But do we have to choose between living in a cave or living in a house? Is there a way to drive cars with gas prices we can afford, or should we get out our spurs, and ride horses or walk to get to where we have to go?

If everyone on planet Earth did not start a car for one whole month how much carbon dioxide would that keep out of the atmosphere? Another question I think about is the effect on the atmosphere the fires in California are having. A fire that consumes 85 square miles must pump out a lot of carbon dioxide.

Did you catch that number? I said 85 square miles of burning everything in it’s path. I wonder if that would equal the amount of carbon dioxide that all the cars, trucks, and buses in America put into the atmosphere in a day, week or month. The point being is that nature through fires, and volcanoes has pumped carbon dioxide into the atmosphere from the start. And I wouldn’t be surprised if nature has pumped more carbon dioxide than man has.

Without reliable affordable transportation mankind will be stalled in this adventure called life. Is it really necessary to shoot ourselves in the foot to save our lives? There are those who would want us to believe that kind of thinking. Then when one suggest that we put a some windmills on the top of a mountain, the green folks resist the idea because it takes away from the view of the trees. Do they stand out all day looking at that mountain? OK, what if we put windmills a hundred yards off the coast in the ocean? And rune my view...no way. So if saving the environment is about saving our lives, shouldn’t we be willing to sacrifice some views for the sake of our lives. After all life involves more than looking at a mountain or looking at the miles of water in the ocean.

While we seek to save the environment for man’s sake, I think it would be wise to do it in a way that doesn’t prevent us from living. You see I can’t walk. I get around via a wheelchair. That means my car is very important to me. And I believe I’m not the only one who will say, yes my car is very important to me. To buy food many Americans use a car to get to the store. If we can’t afford to drive our car because gasoline is too expensive, and if we can’t afford food because we are trying to replace oil with corn or other food products, that’s like shooting ourselves in both feet. When America has plenty of oil, I say in a loud voice, “Drill Here, Drill Now, and Save Money!

Why use corn to drive cars, use the corn to feed cows...and people. Corn should be used as food, not as fuel to drive our cars. Corn is not effective as fuel, and the benefits to the environment verses the added cost it adds to food prices makes ethanol made from food products not a good deal for people, animals, nor the environment. So I say again, Drill Here (We know America has plenty of oil.) Drill Now (Let’s not wait another 20 or 30 years. Make 2008 be the year America gets serious about energy independence.) Save Money (With solar, windmills, nuclear, clean coal, and by drilling for oil in America, we will all save money. We could even make America an exporter of energy.)

Contributor's Note

America has the technology and ability to become energy independent, but do we have the will? Will America drive boldly into the future, or will we limp? A weak America is bad for the whole world. It is time to get to work fixing the energy problem. And we can start by Drilling Here, Drill Now, and save us ALL Money.
